The expansion of the child benefit payment has been welcomed by tens of thousands of parents.
With over 60,000 families set to benefit from the expansion, many parents are wondering if the payment will be backdated.
The payment has been expanded to children who turn 18 before May 2024, and if they’re in full-time education or have a disability.
Minister for Social Protection Heather Humphreys stressed that payments won’t be backdated.
She explained: “Child Benefit is a vital support for so many families and this extension will benefit thousands of families right across the country.
“Up until now saw their Child Benefit cease as soon as their child turned 18,” she said.
“I want to make it clear – this measure applies in respect of all 18-year-olds who are still in Full-Time Education in May 2024.
“Parents of children who recently turned 18 in February will be paid again from May 2024 up to their 19th birthday, once their child is in full-time education.
She added: “If you are out of payment and your child is 18 and still in full-time education, your payment will be reinstated by the Department.”
The €140 payment is not means tested and is usually paid to the child’s mother or their stepmother. However, if they don’t live with either of them then their dad or stepfather will receive the payment.
If a child isn’t living with or being supported by their parents, their guardian may get their Child Benefit.
The news comes after social welfare recipients were warned about a payment date change due to the upcoming bank holiday.
The Department of Social Protection confirmed that payments due on March 18th will be paid on March 15th instead.
Payments due on March 19th will remain the same.
