Minister for Children James Reilly is calling for an abortion referendum

A big step

Carl Kinsella

This movement is gathering momentum.

Earlier this week, we asked our readers whether or not they would support the decriminalisation of abortion in Ireland. An overwhelming 88% respondents said that they were in favour of decriminalisation.

It seems as though the matter could soon be put to the country at large, as Minister for Children and Deputy Leader of Fine Gael has called for a referendum on the issue.

Speaking to the Sunday Independent, the Minister said that “cannot countenance, as a doctor or human being” forcing women to carry to term a baby that is suffering from a fatal, foetal abnormality.

“But most repugnant of all to me is that they have to leave this country for a termination and then sneak back in like criminals to bring their babies’ remains back. That’s patently wrong,” Reilly continued.

Here are the results from our poll on Friday.
