Kate Demolder

The alarm was raised yesterday when the man phoned the Guards to inform them that he was missing.

A walker who had been missing on Carrauntoohil since last night has been found safe and well by the team at Kerry Mountain Rescue.

The missing man is believed to be of German descent, and in his 30s. He has since been airlifted to University Hospital Kerry by Shannon-based R115.

It’s believed that the man was located high on the mountain in a notoriously tricky area called the Bone.

A search to find the man began yesterday, but was was suspended at about 1am due to extreme weather. It’s understood that the search involved the Valentia Coast Guard helicopter, Kerry Mountain Rescue, An Garda Síochána and a number of search teams.

In a separate incident, three climbers were rescued from Carrauntoohil yesterday following getting into some difficulty on the mountain. Two separate rescue operations took place.

These two incidents follow the status orange weather warning Met Éireann issued for Kerry just two days ago.
