Figures released by Naughton in response to a Parliamentary Question revealed that 24,686 domestic abuse incidents were reported up to 9 September this year, meaning roughly one report was made every 15 minutes.

Over a third of the attacks were reported in Dublin, with just under 9,000 cases reported, meanwhile 2,021 were reported in Cork, 1,202 in Limerick, 1,152 in Louth and 1,074 in Galway.

The offences listed included violence, breach of a barring order and breach of a protection order, among others.

"I am working with my colleagues and with our partners to ensure we have an appropriate collective national response that supports victims and holds perpetrators to account," Naughton said.

"An Garda Síochána attaches the highest priority to domestic abuse incidents. Operation Faoiseamh - an ongoing initiative - was established to ensure there was proactive and targeted action and supports for those affected during the pandemic."

The Minister added that when victims "present to Gardaí, they are met with a consistently high standard of specialist, professional and expert assistance."
