Ryanair sent out an email to millions of its customers on Tuesday morning.

From 13 June, Ryanair customers can avail of free check-in on Ryanair flights from 48 hours before departure until two hours before departure and will have to pay a €5 fee if they do not check in during that period.

As it stands, Ryanair customers have almost five days to avail of the free check-in policy, but customers will only have a 46-hour window to do so from 13 June onwards.

In a statement to JOE on Tuesday morning, a Ryanair spokesperson said: “Online check-in (for those customers who don’t choose reserved seats) will be available from 48 hours to 2 hours pre-departure for all flights from Wednesday, 13th June.

“This is more than double the 24 hour check-in period operated by British Airways, Lufthansa, Norwegian and Iberia. This will give reserve seat customers more time to select their preferred seats prior to departure.”

The change comes a few months after Ryanair implemented changes to its baggage policy, which meant that:

  • Only Priority Boarding customers (including Plus, Flexi Plus & Family Plus) will be allowed to bring two carry-on bags on the aircraft*
  • All other (i.e. non-priority) customers will only be allowed to bring one smaller carry-on bag on board, while their second (bigger) wheelie bag will be placed in the hold (free of charge) at the boarding gate.
  • Ryanair’s new bags policy includes cuts to checked bag fees (from €35 to €25) and an increase in the check-in bag allowance from 15kg to 20kg to encourage more customers to book check-in bags and reduce the volume of carry-on bags.

In an email sent to customers, Ryanair said if “any affected customers flying on or after June 13th who do not wish to accept this check-in policy change have the right to cancel and request a full refund within 5 days of this May 14th notification, after which the change will be regarded as implicitly accepted”.
