New Year’s storm could be on the way for Ireland

Both Met Éireann and Alan O’Reilly from Carlow Weather have predicted a stormy start to the new year.

Weather outlets are predicting that a New Year’s storm could be heading towards Ireland.

In a new video, Alan O’Reilly from Carlow Weather has talked about the possibility of the storm approaching.

The weekend looks to be cloudy, with mist and fog in some places.

Patchy rain will join this into the early days of next week with O’Reilly saying it will ‘turn breezier’ from Sunday.

“There will be some patchy rain at times, mainly in the North and North West as you can see here.

“But a lot of uncertainty as we head towards New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day, it does look like there’s the risk of a storm developing, the latest weather model you see here will show the wind speeds,” he added.

He said winds will ‘possibly increase and get very strong on New Year’s Day, but not all weather models develop the storm in the same way’.

The GFS weather model doesn’t show winds of the same strength, however, the Carlow weatherman continued to say if the storm pulls through, ‘much colder air’ will also come through.

Met Éireann has said that Tuesday, New Year’s Eve, shows ‘some uncertainty’.

“At present it looks windy enough with fresh to strong and gusty southwesterlies. Staying wet up across the north and west,” states the forecast.
