OFFICIAL: Ireland has voted to repeal the Eighth Amendment

66.4% in favour of yes.

The result has been announced with regards to the recent referendum on the Eight Amendment and the Irish public have voted to repeal it.

66.4% in favour of yes, 33.6% for No.

Earlier this afternoon, Taoiseach Leo Varadkar hailed Ireland’s “quiet revolution” that was aimed towards changing Ireland’s constitutional framework on abortion.

“The people have spoken. They have said we need a modern constitution for a modern country,” he said.

Minister for Health Simon Harris added:  Today, a lot of people will breathe a sigh of relief. A sigh of relief that the Ireland we always thought we had, has now been recognised.”

With regards to the next step in drafting the legislation, the Taoiseach said that “we’ll have it through the Dáil and Seanad and enacted before the end of this year.”

Minister Harris added: “On Tuesday, I hope to go to government and ask for permission to draft the legislation. I hope that the drafting will take place over the summer months.”
