Tragic news.
22-year-old Philip Leahy has passed away, succumbing to his injuries received during a swimming accident in the Maryland’s Ocean City last week.
Philip was in America on a J1, and following the accident, the community of his hometown of Ballyhooly set up a GoFundMe page to raise money for his medical support.
The page had already raised over €90,000, but sadly Philip passed away in the late hours of Sunday night.
His college football team, which Philip had captained Ballyhooly to their first ever County Junior B Football title last year, tweeted out their condolences this morning.
With great sadness we inform you of the passing of @CIT_ie student Philip Leahy. We keep his family, friends & @BallyhoolyGAA in our prayers
