PIC: Extremely controversial photograph of Jesus on crucifix will be shown at Irish exhibit

Carl Kinsella

A controversial photograph entitled ‘Piss Christ’ will be on show at an exhibit in Co. Derry between October 8 and December 17.

If you’re still under any confusion about what the photograph might depict – it is a photograph of a crucifix placed in a cup of the photographer’s own urine.

Upon the photograph’s release the artist, Andres Serrano,  received death threats and hate mail, and he lost grants due to the controversy. However, the piece has also won awards, such as Southeastern Centre for Contemporary Art’s “Awards In The Visual Arts” competition.

Serrano took the photo in 1987 and this is the first time it will be on show in Ireland. The exhibition will take place at the Void Gallery in Derry.
