PIC: A new record has been set for the biggest fish caught in Ireland

Christ, that’s one big fish.

The Irish Specimen Fish Committee has officially ratified a new Irish record fish, which was caught in Wexford in June of last year. The fish, weighing in at 11.27kg, was caught by Wexford angler Dean Quigley, who caught it on June 10, 2016 in Kilmore in Wexford. The announcement was made in the Irish Specimen Fish Committee report 2016 which just been released, with Quigley breaking a record that had been established as recently as 2015. The Irish Specimen Fish Committee, which is supported by Inland Fisheries Ireland, is an independent voluntary body which verifies and records the capture of large fish caught on rod by anglers in freshwater and marine waters. As well as the new record fish, the report contains detailed information on 485 specimen fish (large fish), comprising 41 different species, taken by anglers from venues throughout Ireland in 2016. The main species were Smooth hound (17%), spurdog (15%) and Carp (10% of total). In total, 28 different marine species (including Bass, Common Skate, Gilthead Bream, various species of Mullet, several species of ray, etc.) were taken by sea anglers, and freshwater specimens accounted for the remainder.
