PIC: One of Trinity College's most iconic trees came crashing down last night
Many students and former students will be heartbroken by the news.
One of Trinity College Dublin's most iconic trees fell to the ground last night. For decades, the tree has played a major part in graduation photoshoots for the many thousands of students who graduate from Trinity every year.
The tree was best known for a low and wide branch that was easy for students to sit on. The tree was situated directly outside the college's Graduates Memorial Building, to the left of the college's iconic campanile.
Trinity College's Twitter account shared a sad photo of the upended tree, which came down at 4am on Saturday morning. The scene has been taped off. The college wrote: "One of @tcddublin’s most wonderful trees came crashing down in Front Square at 4am this morning. Generations will miss this magnificent tree."

Many have taken to social media to express their dismay at the news. Others have already suggested that the tree should be used to create more benches for the college.
It is not yet clear what caused the tree to fall over.
