It could have been so much worse.

The rider of a scooter was lucky to escape without injury in Dublin on Thursday night when he was involved in a collision with a Dublin Bus.

An Garda Síochána shared an image of the incident showing where the scooter ended up below the wheels of the bus as a result of the collision.

Luckily, the rider of the scooter avoided serious injury.

Gardaí said: “DMR South Central RPU: Rider of this scooter had a very lucky escape this evening when he was in collision with a Bus. Please stay safe.”

While the above scooter is petrol powered, you may have noticed electric scooters have become very popular in Ireland over the past six months.

But not all electric scooters are the same and there’s an important distinction to be made as many electric scooters are not mechanically propelled vehicles, meaning that they’re allowed to use cycle lanes in Ireland.

If they use human power to initiate movement then they’re not considered mechanically propelled. In other words, if you have to push them off to get moving, then you can use them in cycle lanes and they do not require tax or insurance.

This is very appealing for travelling in the city and you can read more about the laws surrounding them here.
