Sad news this morning from England.

In desperately sad news, police in London have found a body near Leicester Square, close to the last sighting of missing Galway teenager Patrick Halpin. The DCU student was last seen at the Zoo bar, just off Leicester Square shortly after midnight on Wednesday morning.

Last night police confirmed a body was found in “an enclosed area in the vicinity of Burger King and the Zoo Bar off Leicester Square”.

“Enquiries are under way to establish the identity of the deceased,” police said. No formal identification has yet taken place but an RTE report says that Mr Halpin’s next-of-kin have been informed of the situation.

Yesterday hopes for the family were raised by reports that Patrick had been found at Gatwick trying to board a flight but that turned out to be a tragic false alarm.

UPDATE: Police have confirmed the body found is sadly that of Patrick Halpin.

According to the Irish Independent, a spokesperson for the Metropolitan Police said: “Although formal identification has yet to take place, we believe the body found last night close to Leicester Square is that of missing Irish man Patrick Halpin.

The death is being treated as “non-suspicious”.
