Public sector workers are about to be rewarded with a few extra quid in their pockets.

Approximately 300,000 workers in the public sector in Ireland will benefit from a pay increase of 6% from the Government over the next three years.

According to a report in the Irish Times, the Public Service Pay Commission is expected to recommend an annual 2% pay increase for public service workers over a three-year period in a report due in the next fortnight.

The appointment of the six-member commission was announced by Minister for Public Expenditure and Reform, Paschal Donohoe, T.D. in October of last year, when it was revealed that an initial report by the commission would be provided in the second quarter of 2017.

As well as recommending pay increases for public sector workers, the report is expected to recommend significant reform of the pensions for State employees, with a confidential Government submission to the commission showing that the bill for existing pension arrangements currently stands at €3.3 billion a year.

The document, according to the Irish Times report, urges the commission to “reflect the increased cost of retirement benefit provision in the public service and increased value of these retirement benefits relative to private sector retirement benefits”.
