Relocating to Dublin in the near future? Here’s how much it will cost you

Conor Heneghan

It may not surprise you to learn that Dublin ranks high on the list of the most expensive cities in the world to relocate to.

Dublin is ranked 24th on the list of the most expensive cities in the world to relocate to, according to the 2017 Relocation Price Index by online relocation company Movinga.

To compile the list, Movinga researched the four main factors contributing to the total cost of a first month in a new home: rent for a one-bedroom apartment in the city centre, the cost of mobile phone set up and data plan, the price of a monthly public transportation pass and the cost of food and drink for 30 days.

Based on the total average cost, Dublin ranked in 24th place overall, just above Austin in the US and just below Helsinki in Finland.

Not surprisingly, New York, London, San Francisco all feature in the top five, although none of them claimed the top spot, which went to Luanda in Angola (below).

Movinga also calculated the average cost of a move for each city, for anyone who might be thinking of relocating to the cities on the list in the future. They claim that the figure is accurate for a 250km move of one person (the average distance for a move worldwide).

While the overall cost will be dictated by each unique move, the figure provided is intended as an indicator as to which locations are more or less expensive for utilising moving services.

In Dublin, for example, the average monthly costs were calculated as follows:

Rent: €787.27

Phone set-up: €30

Food and Drink: €521.36

Transport: €120

Commenting on the relocation index, Movinga’s Managing Director Finn Hänsel said: “Berlin, Paris, Frankfurt, Dublin and Amsterdam; these are all cities that may be preparing for an influx of banking industry workers due to Brexit.

“Among the factors that the directors of the banks will have to take into consideration for relocating will be the cost of relocating for employees. Therefore, studies like this will be very important in years to come,” he added.
