PIC: A map of locations in Ireland where country homes over €1 million were bought in the last three years

Millionaires’ playgrounds.

Given the current climate in Ireland, owning any home is a luxury, never mind one that costs seven figures to buy.

We can all dream of the type of house we’d like to buy if we had the means to afford it and those that can afford to do so in Ireland are shacking up in Cork and Wicklow according to recent research by Savills Ireland.

The property consultants revealed that those two counties have proved most popular with country home buyers, with research suggesting that those seeking the benefits of country living are also looking to remain within arm’s reach of major cities.

A heat map of transactions of €1 million and over in Ireland backs that up, with a disproportionate number of transactions located in Dublin and neighbouring counties and along national arterial routes.

Domestic buyers account for the majority of Savills country home sales, but the single biggest deal in each of the last three years was a cash purchase from the UK or the US.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, 85 per cent of Savills country homes sales over the last three years have been cash transactions.

Some day, maybe…
