Road Trip! Three top places to check out this weekend…

Fantastic films, funny festivals and the Fab Four...

JOE

Fancy heading out for a nice relaxing road trip this weekend? Here’s a look at three great places you could head to, whether it’s with the family, or on your own.

Sometimes, there’s nothing better than hopping into the car and forgetting all of life’s woes with a nice long and relaxing road trip. So JOE and MSL have teamed up to bring you three ‘Road Trip’ options that will suit all kinds of drivers; from the experienced long trekkers to the restless short stoppers.

Laugh and learn at the Kilkenomics festival

We were always quite good at economics which seems odd given that it’s quite a serious subject, although we thought it was almost impossible to make jokes about elasticity of demand or the Keynesian school of thought.

Thank god for the Kilkenomics festival then which brings the world’s leading economists and financial analysts together with some absolutely hilarious comedians.

Hearing about Ireland’s economic state may be very interesting, but we have a feeling that you might need a good laugh after hearing a few horror stories. The line-up this year sees some of Ireland’s best comics like Ardal O’Hanlon, Karl Spain, Colm O’Regan, David O’Doherty, Dermot Whelan and Des Bishop.

Relive the genius of The Beatles in Dublin

There isn’t a song, album or band in the world that hasn’t been influenced by The Beatles in some way, although this JOE first heard one of the Fab Four speak for the very first time in Thomas the Tank Engine.

The festival was originally envisaged as a one-off in 2013 to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the only performance of The Beatles in Dublin on 7 November 1963, but it’s back by popular demand. Fans of the band can expect to hear and see some music, talks, art, memorabilia and more from Friday on.

The creator of one of the best parody films of all-time, Neil Innes, who made The Rutles and worked with Monty Python, will also be in conversation with Tom Dunne as part of the festival.

See some films at the Cork Film Festival

The Oscar season is already in full swing as the summer blockbusters are being swept aside by a dramatic tour-de-force in cinemas up and down the country. The Cork Film Festival will once again provide an eclectic mix of films, music and discussion as Ireland’s oldest film festival gets underway in the Opera House, Triskel Christchurch and the Gate Multiplex.

Local talent will be displayed alongside some of the bigger features that include The Drop, The Imitation Game and Disney’s latest, Big Hero 6.

Documentaries, short films and masterclasses will all be on offer also in what promises to be a treat for movie fans. Take a look.
