The opening weekend of the football season in Sweden got off to a tragic start as a football supporter was killed before the Helsingborg v Djurgaarden match.
There were violent scenes at the ground as Djurgaarden fans spilled on to the pitch, having heard the news that one of their own had perished.
The 43-year-old died from serious head injuries after clashes in central Helsingborg.
The match was called off amid chaotic scenes between the two clubs’ sets of ‘Ultra’-style supporters.
“It is a black day,” Helsingborg sporting director Jesper Jansson said afterwards. “It is extremely tragic for this guy’s family, for football and for the whole community really.”
