"We would like to reassure everyone that Ireland is prepared to continue to supply all grocery outlets for the coming months.

“We would like to reassure everyone that Ireland is prepared to continue to supply all grocery outlets for the coming months.”

With a major closure of schools, colleges and public facilities announced by Taoiseach Leo Varadkar on Thursday morning, scenes have emerged on social media of many people swarming grocery stores across the country.

In response, Retail Excellence, Ireland’s largest retail body, has offered assurances to the general public, emphasising that the supply of goods is not in jeopardy.

“This afternoon, Retail Excellence spoke with all the major grocery multiples and forecourt operators in Ireland,” begins an official statement released on Thursday afternoon.

“We would like to reassure everyone that Ireland is prepared to continue to supply all grocery outlets for the coming months. There is no reason for Irish citizens to have any concerns in that regard.”

The statement goes on to note that the retail industry “has never been more prepared” for a scenario such as the unfolding coronavirus pandemic having planned in advance for a potential hard Brexit.

“Minister Heather Humphries has done a tremendous job in monitoring this matter and please be assured that we have more than adequate contingencies in place,” the Retail Excellence statement continues.

“Social media images of empty shelves are simply sensationalising the matter. These shelves are restocked every evening and restocking will continue into the future.”

Retail Excellence also note that shops will remain open, with plans in place to ensure that supply chains are not interrupted.

From 6pm on Thursday, containment measures will remain in place until 29 March. Schools, colleges, childcare and cultural institutions will close.

Taoiseach Varadkar has said that indoor mass gatherings of more than 100 and outdoor mass gatherings of over 500 should be cancelled. Additionally, businesses have been instructed to allow remote working where possible.

Public transport is also expected to continue. The Taoiseach also recommended that people reduce social interaction as much as possible.
