Sinéad O’Connor won’t be joining Sinn Féin after all

She doesn't want to be "bored shitless"

The singer had hinted at a political career but has now be gently persuaded against it.

Sinéad O’Connor won’t be debating in the Oireachtas any time soon after dropping plans to join Sinn Féin.

The singer wrote on her Facebook page: “They persuaded me that I’d be bored shitless, pretty much waiting for them to get into government before being able to help generate any national discussion on the issue of ending partition.

“There aren’t any plans for such national discussion to be generated in the Republic anytime soon, which seems pretty silly when you consider the fact that we’re all going to have to vote on the issue at some point, according to the terms of the Good Friday Agreement.

“I would have thought it sensible to have such discussions sooner rather than later, since there’s a lot of persuading to be done in the Republic as to why people should care enough to vote at all, never mind vote to end partition.”

O’Connor’s flirtation with the party had been criticised by abuse victim Mairia Cahill, who was raped by a suspected member of the IRA.

“I had no explanation for how a woman who has been so vocal about child abuse could have chosen to join a party which has been in the headlines for their handling of this issue since my own story broke on BBC Spotlight,” she said.
