Coastal areas warned of large waves as strong winds sweep in

Another bout of strong winds is expected to hit Ireland on Monday evening, prompting Met Éireann to issue a yellow weather alert for 11 counties.

The warning begins at 5pm and remains in place until midnight, with southwesterly gusts expected to create potentially hazardous conditions on roads and along the coast.

The counties affected are Carlow, Clare, Cork, Donegal, Galway, Kerry, Kilkenny, Mayo, Waterford, Wexford and Wicklow. Possible impacts include fallen branches, difficult journeys and large waves in exposed coastal areas.

A separate alert has also been issued for parts of Northern Ireland. The UK Met Office warning covers Antrim, Down and Derry from 3am on Tuesday, The Irish Times reported.

More unsettled weather on the way as winds shift direction

The latest wind warning follows a yellow rain alert for Cork and Kerry, which ended earlier on Monday.

Rain affecting the south and east is expected to clear during the evening before another band moves in from the southwest after dark.

Unsettled conditions are set to continue into Tuesday, with strong winds gradually turning from the southwest towards the west.

The forecast also includes sunny spells, showers and the possibility of isolated thunderstorms. Temperatures are expected to reach highs of 14 to 17 degrees.

ESB Networks brings in extra workers to reconnect storm-hit properties

The warnings come as crews continue working to reconnect customers affected by Storm Boelo, which left more than 40,000 homes and businesses without electricity on Sunday.

The west and northwest experienced the greatest disruption.

Although power had been restored to most affected customers by Sunday night, ESB Networks confirmed on Monday that some properties remained without supply.

“There are a number of homes, farms and businesses still without electricity as a result of Storm Boelo in the northwest of the country,” the company said in a statement.

It added that repair teams had been sent out from early Monday morning, with additional crews travelling from other parts of Ireland to help restore electricity to those still affected.
