LISTEN: Storm Ali caused absolute havoc for air traffic control at Dublin Airport

Expertly handled.

As seen by the recent scary footage of a Ryanair flight landing in Dublin, Storm Ali had an incredibly stressful impact throughout Ireland on Wednesday.

Aside from countless flights being cancelled, transport services experiencing disruption, and loads of homes that were left without power, there was the tragic incident involving a caravan that was blown off a cliff near Clifden in Galway on Wednesday morning.

A female in her 50s was in the caravan at the time. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

On Wednesday, Dublin experienced winds of up to 60 knots and the conditions posed a serious headache to anyone that was working in air traffic control at Dublin Airport. To their immense credit, the staff performed extremely well because as you can see in the footage below, there are almost far too many go arounds to count.

With regards to a first-hand account of  what it was like to experience this very bump flight, Kirsten Jongberg was on a flight from Brussels to Dublin Airport.

Speaking with JOE, she said: “There was much screaming and crying from passengers, but pilots guided us in safely on second attempt. We circled for ages before being authorised to land, then the turbulence hit us. The plane would suddenly drop and passengers would groan and scream. We were all hoping it would be over soon and we’re happy to see that we were getting close to landing.”

After seeing the following footage, you might have even greater levels of respect for the professionalism and diligence of those that work in air traffic control – an environment that’s one of the most pressurised in the world.
