Wrap up warm, it’s going to be nippy out.

While the weather so far this month hasn’t exactly been pleasant, the wind and rain have been accompanied by relatively mild temperatures to date.

That’s about to change today and tomorrow, however, due to the arrival of a “cold polar maritime air-mass” that will result in sub-zero temperatures conditions nationwide and temperatures as low as -5 in places.

The northwest looks set to be hit with the coldest weather overnight on Saturday and into Sunday morning and there will likely be frost in sheltered areas throughout the country.

Cold weather aside, the forecast from Met Éireann for the next week does contain some promising signs, with mainly dry conditions and sunny spells promised for large parts of next week.

That dry weather will come with plenty of sunny spells, making for some pleasant winter weather, although temperatures will drop to below zero at times at night.

In amongst all that, Tuesday is expected to see heavy and persistent rain and the long-range forecast hints at unsettled spells with plenty of rain showers heading into next weekend.
