They either get the car fully serviced beforehand and hope for the best, or they do the test and then fix everything that's wrong with the car before doing a re-test. A report in the Irish Sun today might be a help for the next time you're taking the test, because they've revealed the two main reasons cars fail - lighting and electrical faults.
