There’s going to be a huge clampdown on speeding on Irish roads this Friday

You can’t say you weren’t warned.

A national speed enforcement operation will be conducted by An Garda Síochána throughout the country for 24 hours starting at 7am this Friday, May 27. The operation, titled “Slow Down” will be supported by the Road Safety Authority and other stakeholders and is aimed at reducing the number of speed-related collisions, saving lives and reducing injuries on our roads. The operation will consist of high visibility speed enforcement activities to include all 1,031 speed enforcement zones, as well as the delivery of a road safety message through the use of national, local and social media. In addition, Garda personnel will man display stands in key venues to provide road safety advice and distribute road safety leaflets. Speeding drivers were caught out in a number of locations across the country in a similar operation last year and members of the public are asked to support the operation using the #ThumbsUp hashtag on Twitter. https://twitter.com/GardaTraffic/status/734776460360228867 Although there was a reduction in road deaths on Irish roads in 2015 (27 fewer than in 2014), as of last Friday, there were 68 road fatalities on Irish roads so far this year, 13 more than on the same date in 2015.
