Be safe on the road, folks.
Cork has had the highest number of road fatalities of any county in Ireland in 2016 so far, with 17 people losing their lives as a result of incidents in the county.
A review of 2016 to date by the Road Safety Authority (RSA) revealed that there were 89 fatal collisions up until July 21, resulting in 93 fatalities on Irish roads.
There were nine fatalities in Limerick and Tipperary; Limerick (7) had the highest number of driver fatalities, while the highest number of passenger fatalities occurred in Cork (5).
The RSA report reveals that there has been a 10% increase in collisions and an 8% increase in the number of deaths on Irish roads compared to the same period in 2015.
Worryingly, the report states that if the monthly average of deaths (14.3) continues, 79 more people could lose their lives on Irish roads by the end of this year.
Of the driver fatalities that have occurred in 2016 so far, the majority (35 out of 43) were males and the majority of them occurred on higher speed roads (15 on 80km/h roads, 20 on 100km/h roads, two on 120km/h roads, five on 50km/h roads, and one on 60km/h roads).
