A train journey from Dublin to Cork could take as little as one hour in the not too distant future

It would be very fast and very convenient.

Making your way from the biggest city to the second biggest city in Ireland has become a lot easier since the improvements to the M8 motorway in the 2000s, but it could become even faster and more convenient in the not too distant future.

It’s only a proposal for the time being, but amongst the objectives set out by the Cork Chamber in a submission to Government on the National Planning Framework on Tuesday was a reduction in the rail journey time between Cork and Dublin to just one hour by 2040.

The submission, which proposes Cork as an international city to drive growth, also discussed Cork developing into an internationally competitive high-rise city, improving connectivity to Limerick and Waterford, creating an additional 121,000 jobs in the country and reaching a population target of 846,000 people.

Speaking to Red FM about reducing the rail journey time from Cork to Dublin to just one hour, CEO of Cork Chamber Conor Healy said: “This is very much supportive of a vision that Irish Rail would have in terms of improving the connectivity; we are making progress, we’re close to a two-hour journey time now between Cork and Dublin.

“Well I think we need to be ambitious and we need to be striving for something more than that over the next 25/30/35 years and we need to start thinking about things like that now, we need to start planning for it and we need to start making the case to Government in terms of justifying those types of investment.”
