Heartbreaking news.

A young Irish man who died while on a skiing trip to the French Alps has been named as Cian O'Brien.

O'Brien, who was just 20 and from Cork, was abroad with friends as part of a trip to the Alp d'Huez resort, reports CorkBeo.

It's been reported that O'Brien suffered a medical emergency in the early hours of the morning.

His friends alerted the emergency services after finding him unresponsive.

Despite best efforts from first responders, O'Brien was sadly pronounced dead by a local doctor.

O'Brien has been described as a popular young man who was working as an electrical apprective for a company in Cork.

He was working towards his full trade qualification and had set up his own electrical installation company.

His family are said to be in the process of repatriating his body back to Ireland.

A GoFundMe has been set up to support them at this time.

Local Fine Gael Councillor, Damian Boylan, told CorkBeo: "As a father with children of the same age, I cannot imagine the grief and hurt his family is going through at the moment. Cian was a very popular young man from a well-known family, and the communities here in Tower and Blarney will rally behind them in this difficult time."

Blarney United also paid tribute to O'Brien writing: "All at Blarney United were shocked and deeply saddened to learn of the sudden passing of our former player Cian.

"Cian and Paul were both valued members of our club for many years from academy, through schoolboys and into youth football. May Cian rest in peace."
