The woman has been named as Meg Haugh.

Tributes have been pouring in for a young Cork woman who died recently in the Philippines.

Meg Haugh, who was 26 and from Ballintemple, died while canyoneering in Badian, southwest Cebu.

Ms Haugh was canyoneering with a friend when she began struggling with chest pains and breathing around halfway through the three-hour activity.

Canyoneering consists of a number of outdoor activities such as hiking, swimming, and jumping, while crossing canyons.

Those who were with Ms Haugh tried to contact the emergency services but were unable to get a signal and attempts to revive her were unsuccessful, according to reports.

Ms Haugh was later pronounced deceased at the Badian District Hospital.

RTE reports that Ms Haugh had been working as a doctor in Australia and it’s believed she was planning to return home within the next two weeks.

Ms Haugh’s family are closely associated with Avondale United football club who paid tribute to her on their website, writing: “It is with heavy hearts that we learn of the untimely passing of young Meg Haugh, daughter of Richard Haugh.

“As a mark of respect to Richard, our friend, Child Safe officer and Committee member, with a long service to the club, the Club Academies will not run today Friday 3rd of May and our weekend Home Matches are cancelled.

“Our thoughts are with Richard and family including uncle John Haugh, an underage coach, extended family and friends. May Meg rest in peace.”

Local councillor Mary Rose Desmond described Ms Haugh’s death as “the most tragic of circumstances and every family’s worst nightmare”.

She added: “Such a beautiful girl and to have such a tragic incident happen to her when living her life to the full is terrible.”

Ms Haugh’s death notice tells that Ms Haugh died “suddenly” on May 2 “in the company of her good friend Tessa while exploring the beautiful Philippines”.

It adds that she was the daughter of Richard and Kathryn, the “adored” sister of Sally, Marty, and William.

The notice continues, reading: “Meg will always be remembered by her loving parents, siblings, grandfather, aunts, uncles, cousins, great friends, and wonderful neighbours.”

Funeral arrangements are yet to be confirmed.
