Trump says injecting disinfectant comments were “sarcastic”

OK, it’s all been a little bit bizarre right?

Many of us were asleep in our beds when US President Donald Trump went rogue and suggested that injecting disinfectant into the human body could be an effective treatment for Covid-19.

“I see the disinfectant knocks it out in a minute. One minute,” Trump said during a White House daily task force briefing.

“Is there a way we can do something like that by injection inside? Or almost a cleaning. It gets in the lungs and does a tremendous number on the lungs.”

“So it will also be interesting to check that so you’re gonna have to use medical doctors. But it sounds, it sounds interesting to me so we’ll see.”

The move prompted warnings from doctors and disinfectant producers around the world warning people “under no circumstance” to ingest or inject disinfectant.

However, Trump has now said his comments were sarcastic and not meant to be taken seriously.

“I was asking a question sarcastically to reporters just like you, just to see what would happen,” Trump said on Friday.

“I was asking a sarcastic and a very sarcastic question to the reporters in the room about disinfectant on the inside. But it does kill it and it would kill it on the hands, and it would make things much better.”

Earlier on Friday, a White House spokesperson said that Trump’s comments had been taken out of context.

“President Trump has repeatedly said that Americans should consult with medical doctors regarding coronavirus treatment, a point that he emphasised again during yesterday’s briefing,” White House spokesperson Kayleigh McEnany said in a statement issued on Friday.

“Leave it to the media to irresponsibly take President Trump out of context and run with negative headlines,” she added.
