Who’d have thought filling out a form could be such fun?
In normal circumstances it wouldn’t, of course, but there’s a novelty in filling out a document that we only have to fill out once every five years and that applies to every single member of the population.
There’s a vulnerability about having to reveal personal information about a wide range of topics, from your religious preference to your ability to speak our native language.
Not to mention that the requirement to declare exactly where you’re staying on one particular night of the year led to plenty of easy jokes about the reasons why one might not be at home.
