The PSNI has confirmed that two viable pipe bombs were found in Derry on Monday afternoon.

In a statement reprinted by the Derry Journal, PSNI Inspector Jonny Hunter confirmed that police discovered two explosive devices in the Waterside area of the city after being called to the area.

“ATO were tasked to the scene and the objects have since been declared viable and taken away for further forensic examination”

The incident resulted in the closure of the Rossdowney Road for several hours.

“Thankfully, no one was injured because of the reckless actions of criminals who showed absolutely no regard for the community by placing two potentially deadly devices in a built-up area.”

Hunter urged the public to remain vigilant, and steer well clear of suspicious devices, instructing that people phone the police rather than approach the device. The devices from yesterday’s incident are currently being investigated.
