A plume of smoke stretches five kilometres into the air above volcano near the city of Kagoshima.

Sakurajima is one of the most active volcanoes in Japan and yesterday it put on a real show. A plume of smoke and ash rose three miles above the volcano on Sunday, coating the nearby city of Kagoshima in ash.

Almost continually erupting since 1955, the massive eruption yesterday was the 500th recorded this year alone but the plume of smoke was a record high.

Nobody was hurt by the resultant ash cloud but residents of Kagoshima had to wear face masks and local train services were suspended. A clean-up operation is now underway to remove the thick layer of ash from the streets, though further eruptions are expected.
