Carl Kinsella

Video has surfaced on social media of protesters coming into confrontation with police forces in Brazil as the Rio Olympics get underway tonight.

Photos also show a gathering of protesters burning the Brazilian flag in protest.

Brazil is currently in a state of political turmoil. The country still suffers from aggressive poverty, and its president Dilma Rousseff is current suspended and awaiting trial, after the country’s own Senate decided this week to try her.

Many have protested the Olympics on the streets of Rio, and these protests have reached a boiling point today with authorities using tear gas to disperse the crowd.
