Shots were fired at on-duty officers in Gorey on Wednesday morning.

Gardaí have condemned the perpetrators of what they have described as a “reckless” and “outrageous” act that took place in Gorey, Wexford on Wednesday morning.

Shortly after 8.30am, uniformed Gardaí in Gorey attempted to stop a blue BMW 318 with a registration 06-W-1012.

The car failed to stop along the R725 Gorey to Carnew Road, where it had been driving erratically and dangerously.

The driver of the car, a man described as six foot tall, of slim build and wearing a long black jacket with a hat and a scarf over his face, subsequently discharged two shots from a handgun at pursuing uniformed Gardaí.

The car was later discovered burnt out in the townland of Banntown in Wexford.

On Wednesday evening, Superintendent Gerard McGrath described the events as both “reckless” and “outrageous” while confirming that both Gardaí involved in the incident were uninjured.

“The illegal discharge of a firearm is a reckless act at any time but the discharge of a firearm at unarmed uniform members of An Garda Síochána responding to the public needs is an outrageous act.

“I will ensure that this criminal act is investigated fully and I appeal to any member of the public with any information, no matter how small, to call An Garda Síochána with that information to bring this dangerous culprits to justice.

“Both members of An Garda Síochána were uninjured in this dangerous encounter and are receiving the full supports of An Garda Síochána welfare services.

“An Garda Síochána Can be contacted at Gorey Garda Station at 053 943 0690, the Garda Confidential Number 1800 666 111 or any Garda Station.”
