Woman in her 60s killed and six others injured in Mayo crash

The fatal collision occurred yesterday afternoon.

A woman in her 60s has died and six other were hospitalised following a two-vehicle crash in Newport, Co Mayo late yesterday afternoon.

A spokesperson for the Gardaí said that a female passenger of one of the vehicles was pronounced deceased at the scene shortly after emergency services had arrived.

Her body was taken to the mortuary at Mayo University Hospital where a post-mortem will take place in due course.

The two other occupants of the same vehicle, a male and female, are currently receiving medical treatment for serious injuries at Mayo University Hospital.

Four occupants of the second vehicle were also taken to Mayo University Hospital with injuries that are understood to be non-life threatening.

The N59, Newport to Mulranny road, was closed for much of yesterday evening as Garda Forensic Collision Investigators conducted a technical examination of the scene.

Gardaí are appealing for any witnesses to this collision to come forward.

Any road users who may have camera footage (including dash-cam) and were travelling in the area at the time of the incident, are asked to make this footage available to investigating Gardaí.

Thursday’s incident brings the total number of people killed on the country’s roads this year to 117, up from 103 on the same period in 2023.
