Trinity College in Dublin was the only Irish university to break the top 100.
Eight third level institutions in Ireland featured in the
QS 2018 World University Rankings, published on Wednesday.
Trinity College in Dublin was the highest ranked of the Irish universities in 88
th place, followed by University College Dublin (168), NUI Galway (243), University College Cork (283) and Dublin City University (391).
There were also mentions for University of Limerick (501-550), Dublin Institute of Technology (651-700) and Maynooth University (701-750).

The annual rankings are compiled using six simple metrics believed to effectively capture university performance:
- Academic Reputation (40%)
- Employer Reputation (10%)
- Faculty/Student Ratio (20%)
- Citations per faculty (20%)
- International Faculty Ratio (5%)
- International Student Ratio (5%)
Three of the Irish universities in the rankings – NUIG, UCC and University of Limerick – were awarded a five-star rating in accordance with a system which allows students to get a wider picture of an institution’s qualities, looking at everything from the employability of graduates, to sports facilities and community engagement.
As regards the best of the best universities in the world, nine of the top 10 are located in the United States and the United Kingdom, with MIT topping the list ahead of Stanford and Harvard and ETH Zurich coming in at number 10 on the list.
