The number of infections nearly doubled in one day.

The death toll from the new coronavirus now stands at 106, Chinese authorities have said, after the number of cases almost doubled in just one day.

Authorities in Hubei, the Chinese province at the center of the outbreak, said an additional 1,300 cases had been confirmed, bringing the number in the region to over 2,700, and the total number worldwide to over 4,500.

There were 25 deaths on Tuesday, authorities confirmed, with all but one in Hubei province where the virus is believed to have originated.

It was also confirmed on Monday that a 50-year-old man had died in Beijing, which was the first fatality from the virus in the Chinese capital.

Elsewhere in China, cases have been confirmed in every province and territory except for Tibet.

This week, in a bid to prevent the virus spreading, Tibet announced the indefinite closure of all tourist attractions and a mandatory two-week quarantine for anyone entering the region.

The virus is officially known as ‘2019-nCoV’, but has been dubbed the ‘Wuhan Virus’ by the public.

The newly identified coronavirus can cause pneumonia, but not enough is known about the virus to fully understand its transmission and how dangerous it is.

On Monday, it was revealed a Chinese student at Waterford Institute of Technology (WIT) is being kept in isolation in his accommodation in Waterford having travelled to Ireland from Wuhan in China in recent days.

The student left Wuhan some days ago, before the city was closed. He has presented no signs of illness and has agreed to stay in his accommodation by himself for the time being as a precautionary measure.
