Heartbreaking news from Down Under this morning.

A young Irish father has been killed in a violent stabbing attack in Western Australia.

32-year-old Charlie McCarthy was stabbed in the head during an altercation in the city of Perth on December 23, and was immediately rushed to hospital. It’s understood that he was stabbed in his temple with a screwdriver.

He was waiting at a taxi rank with his wife Nicole when a row broke out with two nearby men. He was put on a life support shortly after in Perth Hospital’s intensive care unit.

Tributes have been pouring in on Facebook from his local parish of Aghada in East Cork.

”So sorry to hear of the passing of Charlie McCarthy of Upper Aghada who lived in Perth with his young family. Let us keep his family in Perth and here at home in Aghada in our prayers.”

Mr McCarthy is survived by his wife Nicole, his five-year-old daughter Ciara and two-year-old son Niall in Australia.

A 34-year-old man was arrested at the scene. It’s believed he has been charged with assault causing grievous bodily harm, having appeared in court following the incident.
