But he is not the favourite to win the next election.

Ladbrokes have suspended betting on Leo Varadkar beating Simon Coveney to be the next leader of the Fine Gael party, and thus becoming the next Taoiseach. The bookmaker suspended the market on who will be the next Taoiseach on Saturday when Varadkar became the odds on favourite at a price of 1/33. There was a point in March that Coveney drifted into favourite, but since Enda Kenny's announcement that he would step down as Taoiseach last week, Varadkar has become the front-runner by some distance. However, Varadkar is NOT the favourite to win the next election, which Ladbrokes believe we will see before the year is out. The odds are at 4/6 for us to have an election before the end of 2017, and if the bookies are to be believed, Micheál Martin will be our next Taoiseach. Ladbrokes place Martin as 4/6 to be Taoiseach after the next election with Varadkar at 6/5. Coveney sits at a distant 20/1, while Gerry Adams is a couple of thousand miles behind the rest at 80/1.
