British Foreign Secretary forgets what country his wife is from

Carl Kinsella

Jeremy Hunt

Genuinely: how does this happen?

For the last year or more, the United Kingdom got used to Boris Johnson as their Foreign Secretary — so they’re used to high-profile gaffes.

Since Johnson resigned, the position has been filled by Jeremy Hunt, who appears to be carrying on BoJo’s legacy.

Hunt, making his first trip to China in his new role, accidentally mistook his wife’s own nationality while speaking to Chinese foreign minister Wang Yi.

“My wife is Japanese,” Hunt said, before quickly realising his error and saying: “My wife is Chinese. That’s a terrible mistake to make.”

It… undeniably is.

Hunt went on to speak about the strong connections to China in his family: “My wife is Chinese and my children are half-Chinese and so we have Chinese grandparents who live in Xian and strong family connections in China.”
