programme for government

Update 8.45pm

All three parties have now endorsed the Programme for Government after the Green Party voted to go into government by 76% to 24%.

Micheal Martin is expected to be elected Taoiseach at a special meeting of the Dáil on Saturday.

If all goes to plan for the parties, Micheál Martin will be elected Taoiseach tomorrow.

Fine Gael has given its backing to the programme for government, voting in favour of entering a coalition comprised of themselves, Fianna Fáil and the Green Party.

Fine Gael announced the results of their voting shortly after 4pm today with 80% of the party voting in favour for the Programme for Government.

The total number of votes cast was 674, which is a turnout of 95%.

Counting of Fianna Fáil votes is currently underway but tallies appear to be showing a more convincing backing of the Programme for Government than was expected prior to voting.

The official results are expected to arrive between 6pm and 7pm.

The results of the Green Party vote is expected around 8pm this evening with voting only closing at 12pm on Friday, with the result more difficult to call.

If the programme is agreed by all three parties, it’s expected Micheál Martin will be elected Taoiseach by a special sitting of the Dáil on Saturday.

The results will either clear the way for a new government or else a political crisis which could lead to another general election.
