They’ve made their pick.

Sinn Féin have chosen Liadh Ní Riada as their candidate for the upcoming presidential election.

The MEP was announced as Sinn Féin’s official candidate on Sunday afternoon.

Sinn Féin posted the news on their official Twitter page.

The party had said in August that they would be announcing their official candidate at some point in September and Ní Riada had been the favourite since this news broke.

She posted to Twitter to voice her pride, saying: “I’m deeply honoured to be selected by Sinn Féin to be a candidate for President of Ireland.

“For those who haven’t met me, this is my story. I look forward with great energy & enthusiasm to meeting, listening & sharing ideas with people in the days ahead.”

She also posted a 15-minute video on YouTube where she went into detail regarding her reasons for running for President.

Earlier on Sunday we reported that a poll suggested that Michael D. Higgins would be re-elected relatively comfortably.

His closest rival is one of two Dragon’s Den alumni listed, Sean Gallagher.

Gallagher failed to win during his 2011 bid for the Presidential Election.

The general election is due to take place on 26 October.
