Once again, Mad Monday results in controversy…

The traditional Mad Monday celebrations, when Australian players of various codes enjoy the first day of their closed season with a massive booze-up, have once again led to a controversy.

Last year a St Kilda player was fined $3,000 for setting a dwarf entertainer ablaze at a party, while two years ago, NRL club Canterbury Bulldogs were caught on camera urinating on their own pitch before offensive remarks and gestures, clearly heard by the media, landed them with a $30,000 fine. Countless other incidents have been catalogued over the years.

We are frankly surprised clubs still allow players to participate in Mad Monday but they do and this year’s controversy surrounds AFL club Melbourne.

One of their players, Dean Terlich, posted a picture of himself on Instagram apparently dressed as Rolf Harris, and beside him was another team-mate, Alex Georgiou, apparently dressed as a young girl.

Harris was jailed earlier this year after his conviction for a number of sexual assaults on victims as young as eight.

“Dean and Alex have made a poor and inconsiderate mistake in choosing their costume’s today,” a spokesman for the club told the Herald Sun. “We will speak to these players about their error in judgment.”
