Bono was a bit of an arse when he made that famous cameo in The Simpsons

The Simpsons

Very cheeky.

It must take something special to upstage the biggest band in the world during their cameo on the bets show in the world – hey, at the time of U2’s appearance, The Simpsons was still in its golden age – but Ray Patterson (Steve Martin) in Trash of the Titans achieved just that.

Cynical, dry and full of loathing for Homer, his contempt was a joy to behold.

‘Can’t Someone Else Do I?’ better than Ray? No, the answer is no. It’s just a shame that he’s not one for speeches.

This being said, there were some other joys in that episode which saw Homer run for Springfield’s Sanitation Commissioner. In fact, the episode won an Emmy Award for Outstanding Animated Program (For Programming One Hour or Less).

There’s the wonderful satire of Valentine’s Day with the cynically-inspired Love Day, the wonderful track ‘The Garbage Man,’ and U2’s cameo.

There’s Adam Clayton and his weird obsession with spoons, Homer as ‘The Potato Man,’ The Edge wanting to leave Bono on stage before slipping out to Moe’s for a pint, and Bono singing “the sanitation folks are jolly friendly blokes, courteous and easy going, they mop up when you’re overflowing and tell you when your arse is showing.”

Well, Bono’s arse also made an appearance during the recording of the episode. During a recent Reddit AMA, Yeardley Smith (voice of Lisa) was asked what’s the weirdest/funniest thing that’s happened while in production of The Simpsons.

She replied by saying: “When Bono from U2 guest starred on The Simpsons and our music supervisor told him he was a bit “pitchy” he mooned us.”

Hold Me, Thrill Me, Kiss Me, Moon Me.
