Cavan GAA investigating overnight fire at Kingspan Breffni Park

RTÉ Sport understands the fire brigade attended the stadium after midnight to extinguish the blaze.

Nobody was present at the ground when the incident occurred, and it is believed the damage was contained to the kitchen.

Assessors were at the venue on Friday working out the full extent of the damage and the root cause of the fire.

The immediate problem is services: the stadium is without water and power, ruling it out as a venue while that assessment continues.

Six championship games on the move

The timing is awkward. Crosserlough beat Laragh at the ground on Thursday night in the Cavan senior club football championship.

A further six senior football championship fixtures had been down for decision there this weekend: Ramor v Ballyhaise, Arva v Cavan Gaels, Cuchlainns v Kingscourt, Castlerahan v Gowna and Killygarry v Mullahoran.

Those games will now be played at alternative venues.

In a statement, Cavan GAA said: "Due to a major incident at Kingspan Breffni overnight, the venue is out of commission for the weekend.

"Thankfully nobody was injured but currently no power or water in the stadium.

"Further details will be shared once the full extent of the damage has been assessed. Thank you for your understanding."

It is a reminder of how much weight one county ground carries in a busy club season, a theme in debates about how county boards handle their grounds and codes.
