Chelsea’s new manager has been confirmed by the Australian FA

This is a strange one.

The Australian Football Association has confirmed that Guus Hiddink has taken charge at Chelsea until the end of the season, despite no official word from the club yet.

A post on the Socceroos’ website read: “Guus Hiddink has taken temporary charge at struggling EPL giant Chelsea after the club announced they’d sacked coach Jose Mourinho overnight following the club’s disastrous run in the English Premier League.”

The post was since changed back to reflect the fact that the Premier League strugglers had not yet made the news official, but it was still odd given that Hiddink’s association with Australia ended in 2006.

Former Chelsea striker Mateja Kezman claims to have spoken to Hiddink, who told him he was going back to Chelsea. The Dutchman also managed the club on a temporary basis after the sacking of Luiz Felipe Scolari in February 2009.

“I do not know if it is officially confirmed, whether the club has announced it, but Guus told me earlier,” said Kezman.

“I am convinced that with him Chelsea will recover. I would even say they are one of the favourites for the Champions League.”
