Colombian ambassador responds to The Sun’s tasteless front page

England meet the South Americans this evening.

The Colombian ambassador to the United Kingdom has described The Sun’s most recent front page as “sad.”

With England set to meet the South Americans this evening in Moscow, the newspaper splashed the following message across their frontpage:  “As 3 Lions face nation that gave us Shakira, great coffee, and er, other stuff, we say…GO KANE!”

As you may know, narco-terrorism and the drug industry has ravaged Colombian society and caused the deaths of thousands of people since the 1980s.

In response to this message, Nestor Osorio Londono, Colombian ambassador to the United Kingdom, has said The Sun’s message is “rather sad.”

Speaking with The Guardian, he said: “It’s rather sad that they use such a festive and friendly environment as the World Cup to target a country and continue to stigmatise it with a completely unrelated issue. Respect, fair play and joy for the game is all that matters tonight. We’ll be cheering for Colombia and hoping we can all enjoy a great match.”

The paper argued that their headline was “suitably light-hearted considering the context.”

The last 16 match gets underway at 19:00.
