The rising reputation of Irish cricketer Eoin Morgan continues unabated, with the Dubliner possibly set to captain England for the first time this weekend.

Morgan has been appointed as vice-captain of the English Twenty20 side, where he will act as deputy to skipper Stuart Broad.

The appointment underlines the impact the 24-year-old has enjoyed in the game over the past four years, when he represented Ireland at the World Cup in the West Indies before going on to win recognition at Test level with England.

He was interviewed for the position over Skype – that wouldn’t happen in soccer, would it? – recently, when he was rolling in the big bucks during the Indian Premier League with Kolkata Knight Riders.

And with fast bowler Broad struggling with a heel injury ahead of Saturday’s game against Sri Lanka in Bristol, Morgan is on standby to take on the top job.

Should that eventuality come to pass, he would become the first Irishman ever to captain an England cricket team.

Morgan has plenty of captaincy experience, having led Ireland at the U19 World Cup in the past and also been named as skipper of Middlesex at the age of just 22.
