Marussia driver Jules Bianchi is undergoing surgery on a severe head injury after crashing at the Japanese Grand Prix.

After Adrian Sutil crashed on an extremely wet track, Bianchi crashed into a tractor that was collecting the Sauber driver’s car.

Bianchi was taken unconscious to Mie University Hospital by ambulance as a helicopter could not fly in the torrential rain.

Williams driver Felipe Massa blamed organisers for failing to stop the race, won by Lewis Hamilton, in such unsafe conditions.

He said: “In my opinion they started the race too early because it was not driveable at the beginning and they finished the race too late.

“I was screaming on the radio five laps before the safety car that there was too much water on the track but they just took a little bit too long. It was dangerous.”
